Institute of Engineering in Medicine (IEM)
The Institute of Engineering in Medicine (IEM) has over 130 outstanding faculty from UCSD’s Schools of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Jacobs School of Engineering, all sharing the objective of translating creative ideas into clinical medicine and novel products that will transform patient care and improve the health and well-being.
IEM was established at UCSD as an Organized Research Unit in July 2008. It has made excellent progress during the first year of operation due to the superb efforts of the faculty, students and staff, and the strong support by the administration and industry partners.

The Key Laboratory of Biorheological Science and Technology (Chongqing University), Ministry of Education
Introduction:
The key laboratory of biorheological science and technology (Chongqing University) was initiated by the Ministry of Education of China in June 2009, and was officially authorized to operate in December 2011. It successfully passed the Assessment to Key Laboratories of Ministry of Education at September 2016. The Biorheological Science aims to study, via a multi-scale approach, the philosophy behind the structure and function of molecular, cell and organ within the biomedical domain, which consequentially results in new methods and technologies. This field has drawn great interests from a group of domestic and foreign elegant researchers. Their research outcomes continuously appear at the set top-tier academic publications, such as Nature, Science and its child journals, Adv Mater, etc. The research programs of this Laboratory are well aligned with the state-of-art in global society of Biorheological Science, with the focus on the cause of cardiovascular / bone & joints / tumor diseases from the biorheological perspective, biomaterials for tissue repair, and the innovation on biopharmaceutics and medical devices. The outcomes of these researches successfully accelerated the scientific innovations of regenerative medicine, medical device and biomedicine. In addition, these outcomes also help to stimulate the innovations in aerospace medicine and brain science.
Research fields:
- Biomechanics & Biorheology in Physiological and Pathological Processes
- Design of Biomedical Materials and its Rheological Properties for Tissue Repair
- Novel Technologies or Methods for Biological Mass Transfer Process Based on Biomechanics
- Biomechanical Effect in Mechanical-Electrical Coupling and its Medical Engineering Application
Shanghai Society of Biophysics
The Shanghai Society of Biophysics was founded in1981. Under the leadership of Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau and Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, the Shanghai Society of Biophysics was formed voluntarily by Shanghai biophysics scientists as an academic social group, with the aims of “uniting and organizing the vast number of biophysics scientists, promoting the prosperity and development of biophysics technology, and promoting the growth and improvement of biophysics science and scientific and technological talents”.
Since its establishment, the Society has held a congress of membership delegates every four years to elect a new council board, and it has been replaced 10 times so far. It has eight working committees and 14 academic and professional committees, with 591 members. Professor Jianping Ding is the current president.
Since its establishment, the Society has successfully held a series of large-scale domestic and international academic conferences, expanding the influence of biophysics at home and abroad.
Throughout its history, the Shanghai Biophysics Society has played an important role in cultivating excellent scientific and technological talents and achievements, establishing a firm platform for production, teaching and research of this discipline and society in Shanghai, conducting international and domestic academic exchanges, improving the scientific quality of Shanghai citizens, promoting the construction of Shanghai’s national economy, and guaranteeing people’s health and good environment.
